Description
Saint George is depicted as a Roman soldier in a dynamic pose on a bucking white horse. In his right hand he holds a sword, with which he is about to deal a fatal blow to the dragon. The monster is located in the lower part of the composition, under the horse’s hooves, which emphasizes its subordination and impending defeat. In the upper right part of the painting is the figure of the princess, who is watching the duel at the cliff from a distance.
A strong chiaroscuro focuses the viewer’s attention on the key moment of the clash, while the dynamics of the movement of horse and rider add immediate tension and energy to the scene. Together with the rich colors and emotions in the gestures of the characters, the picture acquires its strong theatrical character.
