Jaroslav Brychta, Švejk with a Beer

admin — Thu, 08 Oct 2026 10:22:29 +0000

An original figurative sculpture made of colored glass. This piece depicts the popular literary character the Good Soldier Švejk, shown in his characteristic green uniform and holding a beer mug. The glass sculpture reflects Brychta’s distinctive sense of humor, his eye for detail, and a bold stylization of the figure.

Jaroslav Brychta (1895–1971) was a prominent Czech sculptor, glass artist, and professor at the specialized glassmaking school in Železný Brod. He gained renown both at home and abroad for his portrait sculptures and small decorative glass pieces—particularly the popular glass figurines that also served as children’s toys. He was a leading figure in the transformation of glassmaking during the 1920s and 1930s, a period when glass emerged as a medium for original artistic expression. His daughter, Jaroslava Brychtová, and her husband, Stanislav Libenský, successfully followed in his footsteps, becoming famous for their monumental glass sculptures.

Art Deco glass bottle Tango

admin — Wed, 06 May 2026 14:02:11 +0000

The term Tango glass refers to a specific production of layered, colorful glass that originated in the first third of the 20th century in the Czech lands (especially in the Loetz glassworks). A characteristic feature is the contrasting combination of rich monochrome colors (orange, yellow, red) with black or dark blue details in the form of linear edges, handles or spirals. This aesthetic, strongly influenced by Viennese modernism and the designs of Michael Powolný, represented a transition from Art Nouveau decorativism to early modernism and Art Deco. The name reflected the popularity of Argentine tango at the time and its dynamic color symbolism.
