The bronze helmet mask combines zoomorphic and anthropomorphic motifs in an elaborate vertical composition. The lower part consists of a stylized face mask with almond-shaped cut-out eye holes, a wide nose and exposed teeth. The rim of the face and the lower edge are fitted with functional cast rings for hanging textile or plant elements of the costume. The upper vault of the helmet is richly decorated with relief geometric circular motifs. The top of the mask is dominated by a fully three-dimensional sculpture of a horse, on which three stylized riders with characteristic tribal attributes and weapons sit.

Metal casting in the Kingdom of Benin (the area of present-day Nigeria) was one of the pinnacles of court art in West Africa. Bronze masks and sculptures served exclusively to celebrate the monarch (both) and the royal court. The motif of a horseman is a traditional symbol of high status, military power, prestige and wealth in Beninese art, as horses were a rare imported commodity from the northern Saharan regions. The mask was used in palace ceremonies, the worship of royal ancestors and rituals intended to demonstrate the spiritual and temporal sovereignty of the ruler over the entire empire.

Nigeria, 19th century, bronze, 55 x 25 x 35 cm

The traditional African ritual statuette shows highly stylized and geometric body proportions. The dominant hemispherical head bears finely carved features. The extremely elongated neck and torso with one conical breast are tightly wrapped in natural material, creating a distinctive spiral relief. The short, massive lower limbs are depicted in a slight squat and ensure the stability of the entire figural composition.

This specific type of sculpture served young women and girls as a protective amulet and ritual aid to ensure fertility, healthy motherhood and easy childbirth. Women carried the statuettes with them, cared for them as if they were real children and believed that through them they communicated with the spiritual forces responsible for the continuity of the family.

The traditional Yoruba mask of the Gelede type consists of two basic compositional parts – a stylized human face and a complex zoomorphic superstructure. The facial part bears an elaborate polychrome decoration with vertical red, white and green stripes and typical Yoruba scars on the cheeks. On the top of the head, next to a plastically carved chameleon with yellow pigment, a three-dimensional figure of a bird with a massive red beak, which pecks at the head of the mask, dominates. The entire surface bears traces of ritual use, layered polychromy and natural patina.

Gelede masks are used during the ritual ceremonies of the same name, which celebrate and appease the spiritual power of women, especially elderly mothers. These women are perceived as bearers of mysterious creative and destructive power. The mask's construction tells a story or carries a proverb - the presence of a bird and a chameleon symbolizes transformation, magical power, communication with the night world and the ability of mothers to influence the fate of the community. The dance in these masks aims to ensure the fertility of the land, social peace, fertility and prosperity of the entire community.

The traditional carving depicts a kneeling figure holding a sacred ritual bowl called a mboko with both hands. The sculpture bears the classic stylistic features of Luba court art: a prominently arched forehead, an elongated facial area with almond-shaped eyes, a finely crafted intricate hairstyle at the back of the head, and decorative brass studs applied to the forehead and temples.

Mboko vessels were among the most important objects of power and oracles in the Luba kingdom. The kneeling female figure represents a spiritual intermediary, as women were perceived in Luba culture as the only beings capable of preserving the spirits of their ancestors and divine power in their bodies. The mboko bowl served as a place for oracles to store sacred white clay (kaolin). It was applied to the face of a soothsayer or ruler during rituals, enabling communication with the spirit world, purification, divination of the future, and legitimization of royal authority.

The distinctive mask combines an anthropomorphic wooden face with a complex textile and knitted structure. The face of the mask bears naturalistic features covered with light kaolin. The upper part of the head is framed by a massive wreath of densely sewn shells. Above it, four massive, fabric-covered horns with polychromy rise, which converge to the central body. The lower circumference of the mask is framed by a padded textile ring for seating on the dancer's head.

This type of composite mask from Nigeria represents a complex embodiment of ancestral spirits or powerful protective deities. The sewn shells are a traditional symbol of wealth, high social status and ritual purity. The curved horns refer to the power of wild animals and male energy. The mask was used during important social events.

The dominant element of the composition is two massive, symmetrically curved horns surrounding the head.

African ceremonial mask represents an idealized face of a female ancestor. The mask shows aesthetic elements characteristic of the Punu ethnic group: a face covered with white kaolin, almond-shaped, closed eyes, protruding lips with red pigment, and an elaborate high hairstyle with linear engraving. On the forehead and temples there is a plastic scarification in the form of nine diamond points (ichumu).

The mask was used in ritual dances during funerals, memorial ceremonies, or celebrations of the birth of twins. The white color symbolizes the world of spirits, purity, and peace. The mask embodies the return of the spirit of a young girl from the other world back to the living to bring protection, blessings, and harmony between the world of ancestors and contemporaries to the community.
