Napoleon’s Illyrian Provinces (1809–1813) were an autonomous part of the French Empire, which Napoleon created after his victory over Austria to cut it off from the sea. They included present-day Slovenia, the coast of Croatia (Dalmatia, Istria), part of Austria and Montenegro. The capital was Ljubljana. After Napoleon’s defeat in 1813, the territory was reoccupied by Austria, which created the formal Kingdom of Illyrian there, which existed until 1849.
