The distinctive mask combines an anthropomorphic wooden face with a complex textile and knitted structure. The face of the mask bears naturalistic features covered with light kaolin. The upper part of the head is framed by a massive wreath of densely sewn shells. Above it, four massive, fabric-covered horns with polychromy rise, which converge to the central body. The lower circumference of the mask is framed by a padded textile ring for seating on the dancer’s head.
This type of composite mask from Nigeria represents a complex embodiment of ancestral spirits or powerful protective deities. The sewn shells are a traditional symbol of wealth, high social status and ritual purity. The curved horns refer to the power of wild animals and male energy. The mask was used during important social events.
