Gustav Schmidt-Cassel studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin with Ernst Herter, became his assistant and later took over his studio. He traveled to Italy, Paris and Russia. In the 1920s he created sculptures of exotic Art Deco dancers with exquisitely detailed costumes.
